The General Post Office is the headquarters of An Post and hold significance importance in Irish history. Located in the heart of Dublin City, on O’Connell Street you can’t miss the G.P.O on your visit to Dublin. The exterior of the post office is iconic, where during the Easter Rising served as the headquarters of the rising’s leaders. One of the most notable moments was when The Proclamation of the Irish Republic was read by Patrick Pearse from the steps of the GPO.
 

The History

The building was sadly destroyed by fire during the rebellion but then rebuilt in 1929. Many people believe that bullet holes from the rising can be seen on the façade, however this has been disputed by several people who claim it is weather damage, neither claim has been confirmed yet.

Recently the GPO witness history experience opened, which allows visitors enjoy an immersive, interactive and engaging experience, learning all about the 1916 rising and modern Irish history.

Learn what the rising like and see events from both sides as you guide your self through the museum. You can also visit the post office itself, which is still a working post office. The most impressive time to visit is Christmas where the put-on wonderful display for all to enjoy. The GPO is just a 15-minute walk or 10 minutes by public transport from the hotel making the ideal location for visiting this historical site.
