One of the most important buildings in Irish history, the castle was originally built as a medieval fortress the building was damaged badly by fire in 1684. Following the fire, the castle was rebuilt and transformed into a Georgian palace, this is the building that you visit today.

Today you can visit the state apartments, the Viking excavation and the chapel royal as well as enjoying a stroll around the grounds of the castle. To visit these areas of the castle you must take a guided tour which last 60 minutes, however you can access the state apartment and exhibitions on a self-guided tour.
