While we all love the hustle and bustle of the city, sometimes it is nice to get out a bit further and breath in the sea air. The Spencer Hotel is located just a five minute walk from Connolly station meaning you can hop on the Dart and be in a number of coastal villages and towns before you know it. We have picked our favourite coastal daytrips below:
Located in County Wicklow, Bray is the furthest out of the coastal towns but well worth a visit. The town is packed with lots of great things to do. If you fancy getting a good walk in you can do the Bray Head Cliff Walk, which takes you all the way to Greystones and is a seven-kilometre walk so you can take the Dart back to the start point in Bray if you don’t feel like doing the return trip. If you don’t want such long walk you can also walk to the top of Bray Head which will give you an amazing view of the Irish Sea, the Wicklow Mountains and Bray town.
Dun Laoghaire is just a 25-minute journey by DART and is full of life and things to do. Enjoy a stroll out to the end of the harbour where you can watch the boats sail by. Walk further down along the sea and you will come to Sandycove where you can enjoy a paddle in the sea and relax on the beach.
Howth is a small, picturesque fishing village along the North of Dublin Bay with lots to enjoy for a quiet day out. Take a stroll down the pier and from the end you can take in the views of Ireland’s Eye, an island just a 15-minute boat ride from the village. On the uninhabited island, you can view the ruins of a church, the Martello Tower and many species of nesting birds. Back on the mainland, you can enjoy a visit to Howth Castle and Grounds as well as a market which is home to an array of stalls selling everything from handmade jewellery to Irish crafts and vintage antiques.
The main attraction in visiting this coastal village is Malahide Castle and Gardens. Immerse yourself in the history of the castle that has stood there for over 800 years and learn all about the Talbot family that called the castle home. Take a stroll around the gardens, where you can enjoy the walled garden and the butterfly house, home to 20 different species of butterflies that fly among tropical plants. The fairy trail is a favourite amongst young and old, your little ones can use an interactive booklet where they can solve clues around the trail, keeping them entertained as they spot all the hidden gems along the way.
